Police are appealing for calm after reports of a potential child abductor.
Officers say that it is still safe for children to play out as long as they:
Do not talk to strangers
Stay with friends and be mindful of where they are playing
Stay in touch with their parents as to their whereabouts
Following press reports about a potential abductor, police have been inundated with calls about suspicious vehicles. Officers say that all but one of the calls have been made with good intent and a team of specially trained detectives are currently investigating.
Incorrect information is also being published on community and social networking websites leading to more fear in the community.
Chief Inspector Steve Dix from Stockport Divsion of Greater Manchester Police, said "as a parent I fully understand the concern that residents are feeling following the reported incidents, however I now want to appeal for calm.
"Every call that has come into us has been thorougly and robustly investigated and I want to reassure residents there is nothing whatsoever to link any of the incidents.
We have spoken to schools and Neighbourhood Policing Teams and have made appeals throught the media. This has clearly heightened people's concerns but I would urge them to let their children out to play in exactly the same way they would have done a fortnight or so ago."
If anybody does have any concerns they can call their Neighbourhood Policing Team on the details listed below:

An analysis by “The Sunday Telegraph” of the single most oversubscribed school in each area of the country was published in their 5th October edition. One of the oversubscription criteria, applied by the survey, was the number of applications per place made by parents naming the school as their first preference. This year St. James’ Catholic High School in Cheadle Hulme was named in the survey as being the most popular school in Stockport.
Charles Lowry, headteacher said, “This survey gives a tremendously positive message to our school community and affirms the work that we do with our children.”
